Common Leak Detection Technologies for Packaging

Compared to the traditional water bath method, the advantages of new technologies are evident. They enable non-destructive, non-invasive testing of leaks, even for very small defects, in both online and offline applications. These technologies offer rapid detection and are widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and packaging industries, applicable to flexible, rigid, and semi-rigid packaging materials such as pouches, cans, bottles, and blister packs.

1. Vacuum Decay Technology

A leak tester is connected to a testing chamber designed to hold the packaging under inspection. The package is placed in a vacuum-sealed chamber, where single or dual vacuum sensor technology monitors two vacuum levels. During a preset testing period, any changes in absolute or relative vacuum indicate potential leaks or defects in the package.

2. Ultrasonic Technology

This method utilizes ultrasonic waves combined with imaging technology to analyze pouch packaging quality and test the seal integrity of flexible packaging in a non-contact manner.

3. Water Immersion Method

The package is placed in a water-filled container, and compressed air is introduced into the top space above the water level. As a result, the package is submerged in pressurized water. Any small leaks release bubbles, making them easily detectable. (No need for a specific gas inside the packaging.)

4. CO₂ Tracer Gas Method

Packages containing CO₂ gas are placed in a sealed chamber. The leak tester creates a vacuum, generating a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the package. If there is a leak, a CO₂ sensor inside the chamber detects the escaping gas and triggers an alarm. (The tested package remains dry and intact and can still be sold.)

Key Advantages of the Compression Leak Tester

Leak detection technology is widely used in food packaging and other industries to ensure seal integrity. Compared to traditional methods, a packaging leak tester offers several benefits:

• Non-destructive testing

• Suitable for various package sizes

• Extremely fast measurement response time

• Single-package online dynamic detection

• Error-proof design for efficient operation

Application Categories of the Compression Leak Tester

This system provides online, efficient, and non-destructive leak detection for food packaging.

Suitable for:

• Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) for milk powder, cheese, fresh meat, bread, pastries, and sausages

• Packaging line process control

• Online packaging seal detection systems, offering 99.99% monitoring accuracy

• Non-destructive leak testing for flexible packaging, detecting even the smallest leaks

The system provides qualitative results (pass/fail) and quantitative data on leak rate and defect size. To accommodate different package sizes and sensitivity levels, multiple test sizes are available.

The non-destructive pressure decay leak testing method is a standard for package integrity testing. It is a practical alternative to destructive tests like water immersion testing, offering a faster return on investment while addressing critical defects affecting product quality and shelf life.
